Filmmakers have to be careful when making films on subjects that might hurt people’s sentiments. And more so, if the filmmaker is Karan Johar, making a film on terrorism with Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. Given the flurry over the actor’s recent comments on Prophet Mohammad, Karan has gone back to his research books, lest his film, My Name is Khan causes any controversy.

Karan knows he’s walking on glass here with his film and is taking every precaution to see that he doesn’t cross the line. In fact, all filmmakers are putting in extra effort to make sure that they maintain religious and cultural decorum. From Rahul Dholakia, who is making Lamha on Kashmir and the issue of identity in the valley, to Kabir Khan, whose New York is about an NRI Muslim’s confinement in the US for suspected terrorism, they’re all praying that their sensitive films be taken in the right light. They’re hoping that the intolerant sections of the society do not raise an outcry for apparent slights to their religion and beliefs.

Following the unforeseen volatile reaction to Shah Rukh’s statements, Karan is re-checking the facts that form the basis of his research on the film. Reveals a source, “My Name is Khan is a new territory for Karan. He has never done such a subject before. Though Karan insists it’s humane not a political subject, the fact is My Name is Khan is about Islamic isolation and about one individual Muslim’s fight for his dignity in an increasingly hostile world. The last thing Karan wants is fundamentalist groups questioning him about the film.”

There are already murmurs of protest against the film and it can be recalled that while shooting in the US, the unit was denied permission to shoot in a local mosque and a few Muslim members of the unit were simply denied visas to go to US for the shoot.

Our source adds, “Karan is only more adamant now and won’t have his film stopped by protestors. My name is Khan and Qurbaan, his films on sensitive subjects continue to have Muslims Shah Rukh and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles.”

'Idol' wanna-bes hit the road for auditions

"American Idol" tryout season is upon us, but there are no area auditions this year.

Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., hosted 7,000 songbirds for the first round of season nine's auditions yesterday.

"I've had no sleep and I'm a little bit nervous, but mostly excited," said Alycia Kennedy, 20, of Lynnfield, Mass. The Boston College student said she claimed her place in line at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday.

New York City had been among the audition sites for the show's first six seasons, but in 2007 organizers set off for previously overlooked areas such as Omaha and Dallas.

Last year, New Yorkers with an eye on fame could audition in East Rutherford, N.J., but the closest option this year was in Foxborough.

"American Idol" hopefuls can audition in Atlanta on Thursday or Chicago next week.

The tryouts then move from Dallas to Los Angeles to Orlando before ending in Denver.

Still ringing at the box office: No cure needed for 'Hangover'

This hangover just won't quit.

The Warner Bros. comedy "The Hangover" hauled in $33.4 million to remain No. 1 at the box office for the second consecutive weekend.

The tale of a Las Vegas bachelor party gone to extremes raised its total to $105.4 million after 10 days in theaters. It was the first summertime movie to finish No. 1 two weekends in a row.

Disney's latest Pixar animation hit "Up" came in a close second again with sales of $30.5 million.

Sony's thriller "The Taking of Pelham 123" left the station with just $25 million onboard to land third in its debut weekend.

"Pelham 123," a remake of the critically acclaimed 1974 suspense flick, has high-test star power with Denzel Washington and John Travolta facing off over a crackling radio after Travolta's character hijacks a Lexington Ave. subway train.

Prerelease buzz positioned "Pelham 123" as the year's first summer action flick for grownups.

Still, Daily News movie critic Joe Neumaier wrote last week that director Tony Scott's film didn't measure up to "the much-loved and far superior" original.

Other movie reviewers - and apparently many moviegoers - agreed.

Screenwriter Brian Helgeland, of "L.A. Confidential" fame, made several major departures from the original movie, including transforming Travolta's character from calculating and calm to punchy and erratic, and giving the dispatcher played by Washington a dark secret to suggest a flawed hero.

The updated script also adds modern technology like cell phones and thermal imaging and even a Wall Street twist.

"Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian," raked in $9.6 million to land No. 4 at the weekend box office. "Land of the Lost" was fifth with ticket sales of $9.2 million.

Eddie Murphy delivered a dud with the Paramount family comedy "Imagine That," which debuted at No. 6 with a lackluster take of $5.7 million.

The movie features Murphy as a work-obsessed dad whose daughter's three imaginary friends make him a financial whiz with their stock-market picks.

The troubled singer’s comeback tour will gross $100m. But is it a return to form or just another blip on her downward spiral?

Britney has divorced, lost custody of her children and suffered a very public breakdown — prompting fears that her latest renaissance is just a flash in the panOnce upon a time — it seems like an age ago — a 16-year-old dancer from backwoods Louisiana was lucky enough to record a serviceable piece of Swedish pop, make a saucy video for it sporting a sexed-up school uniform and watch the resulting confection, Baby One More Time, shoot to the top of the charts across the Western world.

That was the Britney Spears of then — the young, not-so-innocent, blond pop idol adored by teens and pre-teens alike. She might have had only a so-so voice, but she was certainly blessed with all the right moves.

Over the next few years, as she hit the celebrity stratosphere with her follow-up hits Oops! I Did It Again and Toxic, Britney’s mother insisted with a straight face that she was still a virgin and also insisted, with an even straighter face, in spite of ample photographic evidence to the contrary, that she had never, ever had breast implants.

Such were the innocent days of the late-1990s — a time when America still imagined it could rule the world in peace and prosperity and people still believed you could earn millions of dollars on the internet.

Last year, after two broken marriages — one farcical, the other merely disastrous — two children and a career lacking its former direction, Britney, now 27, had become a poster-child for celebrity dysfunction and slow-motion, paparazzi-hounded self-destructiveness.

But now, less than nine months on, while she is very much not a virgin any more, she finally seems to have rediscovered the musical smarts that made her the brightest star in pop’s firmament.

Her current tour — The Circus Starring: Britney Spears, which arrives at the O2 arena in Dublin on Friday — has, to date, managed to avoid the very public fights with the Press, with her mother, with child-safety advocates alarmed by her mothering technique, and with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. By the time the 60-date world tour ends it will have grossed more than $100 million.

But 2008 was a very different story as she suffered an apocalyptic — and very public — breakdown involving a suicide attempt, losing the custody of her children Sean Preston (3) and Jayden James (2), shaving off her hair and a bizarre incident in which she attacked a car with her umbrella. She was finally institutionalised and placed on psychiatric lockdown.

Gradually, piece by piece, she has spent the last year rebuilding her shattered life and her career. She has been on holiday — albeit heavily supervised — with Sean Preston and Jayden James, though she has still to regain custody. There is even another boyfriend on the scene, Jason Trawick, who doubles as her agent.

But her father Jamie Spears remains in complete control of her career as he has been since he was appointed her legal guardian at her lowest ebb. She is under round-the-clock supervision. Her phonecalls and texts are monitored.

If it is hard to reconcile this image with the uber-confident Spears currently strutting the world’s superdomes clad in ringmaster costume, her trademark blonde locks reinstated, it may be because she was never as easy to categorise as, say, Paris Hilton or Anna Nicole Smith, who appeared to possess no discernible talent whatsoever.

Spears was born in 1981 in Kentwood, Louisiana, a small town near the Mississippi that still boasts on its website about being “the home of Britney Spears”.

Her southern Baptist parents encouraged her talent for gymnastics, and by the age of eight she was already auditioning for Disney’s The New Mickey Mouse Club. She was considered too young for that, but a producer on the show arranged for her to attend summer classes at New York’s Professional Performing Arts School.

Three years later, she made it on to The New Mickey Mouse Club at last, where she mingled with the likes of Christina Aguilera, future boyfriend Justin Timberlake and Joshua Chasez, who would go on with Timberlake to form part of *NSync.

This was the crowd that was to form the heart of her success. Although she went back to Louisiana for high school for a while, she ended up being contacted by Max Martin, a Swedish songwriter and pop producer who also pioneered the careers of *NSync, Backstreet Boys and, later, the first winner of American Idol, Kelly Clarkson. It was Martin who wrote Baby One More Time and came up with her biggest hit, Oops! I Did It Again. The songs were solid, which perhaps accounts for their success, but the production on Britney’s performance was overblown, to put it mildly.

Still, Britney ran with it, becoming the eighth best-selling female artist in American recording history and shifting more than 75 million albums.

In 2001, she signed a lucrative contract with Pepsi to be its poster child. Hollywood offered her a movie (Crossroads, which was a thinly disguised vehicle for all her material). Her mistake, though, was to think she could branch out on her own, without the help of those who made her a star. She broke with Max Martin for her fourth album, In the Zone, and also broke up with Timberlake.

The results were mixed at best. Even a much-publicised lesbian kiss with Madonna at the MTV Music Video Awards could not disguise the fact that her sales were starting to drop off.

Her first single off the album, Toxic, was a hit, but the reviews in the trade Press were considerably less enthusiastic. From there, it just got more and more sordid.

In September 2003, six months after the US invasion of Iraq, she invited widespread ridicule when she told a television interview: “Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision he makes and should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens.”

A few months later, Spears went on a bender in Las Vegas with her childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander and ended up marrying him. Less than four days later, she obtained an annulment.

Within a few months, Spears was engaged to Federline, a dancer and rap singer in her touring band, even though Federline’s most-recent girlfriend was expecting his second child.

Spears’s first child arrived in September 2005, a second less than a year later. Two months after that, she filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences”.

And then the real tabloid hell began: passing out while hosting a New Year’s celebration in a Las Vegas nightclub, entering one drug rehab facility and then another, shaving her head, then wearing an assortment of extensions and wigs that caught the gossip-mongers’ less-than-flattering attentions.

So does Britney’s current whipcracking reincarnation mark a permanent return to form — or is it just another staging post on her inexorable decline?

Theoretically, her age — she is still six months shy of her 28th birthday — is her biggest asset, presumably giving her the luxury of time to sort herself out.

The painful truth is she was a pin-up model for a hit-making machine that used her and then spat her out when it no longer wanted her.

If she can grasp that concept and live with it — and avoid battering cars with her umbrella — she might finally have a chance at a normal life.

True Blood (Vampire fans rejoice: 'True Blood' back in circulation)

For those of us who ordinarily don't care much about the vampire mystique, we're just happy that HBO's showcase vampire drama "True Blood" doesn't turn out to be a bloody mess.

"True Blood" launches its second season Sunday, basking in praise from those who appreciate a complex and fresh vampire tale.

For those who tuned in late, "True Blood" is set in Bon Temps, La., a town where vampires have become a demographic to which everyone needs to pay attention.

Based on a popular series of novels by Charlaine Harris, the show is set in a not-too-distant-future when synthetic blood can be mass-produced. This theoretically eliminates the need for vampires to get their nourishment from ordinary citizens and means they can come out, as it were.

Draw your social metaphors where you will. In any case, the show focuses on Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress with the ability to hear other people's thoughts - which you'd think would be a really helpful talent for a waitress ("I believe you wanted extra ketchup, sir?").

Sookie leads a large and exceptionally good ensemble cast, virtually all of whom make characters with relatively modest roles come to life, pardon the phrase.

Some in town embrace vampires, philosophically or literally. Others, like the organization Light of Day, try to leverage fear and loathing into a campaign against them.

But wisely, the show tries hard to isolate and spotlight small dramas within this broad, exotic and often lethal world.

As the second season begins, Sookie has hit a crisis in her relationship with Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a vampire who was born 173 years ago, but who by vampire calculations is only 33, since he was "turned" 140 years ago. That froze his age.

Specifically, Bill now seems to have taken in Jessica, a 17-year-old with, like, a total teenage attitude. This strains his relationship with Sookie, who must decide whether his explanation is good enough and whether she can trust him.

This leads Bill and Sookie to some graphic encounters whose power seems enhanced by the whole vampire backdrop.

And speaking of graphic encounters, no one will be surprised there are also some new gruesome deaths.

Still, the truth is that "True Blood" isn't going to attract viewers who are indifferent to vampire tales. The show relies too heavily on fascination with that world, and a performance as good as Moyer's necessarily feels stylized - because he's playing a vampire.

Furthermore, without a grounding in vampire lore, many viewers won't get a lot of the nuances, including the humor, in "True Blood." So as good as Paquin and company play it, this is another quality pay-cable show that does have a secret handshake. Or bite.

Chastity Bono's sex change

Chastity Bono will be able to "do something as a man which she could never do as a woman in California," said TMZ. The daughter of Cher and the late Sonny Bono recently announced that she's undergoing a sex change procedure, which will allow her to "ask a judge to legally change" her gender from female to male, thus permitting Bono to then legally marry his longtime female partner. "Exact same person—totally different result. Go figure."

We're really happy for Chastity, said Ted Casablanca in E! Online, and we wish her nothing but the best of luck. But what we don't understand is why Chaz's publicist is asking for privacy for her client while she undergoes the sex change process. "Before all the news broke, Cher and her offspring did supposedly shop the very painful operation required around as a reality-TV show."

Everything about Chastity's sex change procedure is preposterous, said Laura Higgins in Opposing Views. No matter what, she "will always really be a woman"—"changing one's name, cross-dressing, ingesting hormones naturally produced by the opposite sex, and electively amputating healthy parts of one's sexual anatomy don't really change one's biological sex."

Malawi court says Madonna can adopt second child

BLANTYRE, Malawi - Madonna can get "Mercy," Malawi's highest court ruled Friday. The court overruled a lower court, saying the pop star can adopt 3-year-old Chifundo "Mercy" James. "I am ecstatic," Madonna said in a statement in which she also thanked the court. "My family and I look forward to sharing our lives with her."

Madonna's lawyer Alan Chinula said he would now arrange a passport for Chifundo, which could take several days, and was awaiting word from Madonna on travel plans for the girl.

But Peter Baneti, an uncle, said the family welcomed Friday's ruling.

"We hope Mercy will be joining Madonna soon," he said by phone from his village just outside Blantyre.

Madonna adopted a son, David, from Malawi last year, but her request to adopt Mercy was originally rejected in April when a lower court that said the star had not spent enough time in Malawi.

But Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo, reading the three-judge appeal court panel's ruling on Friday, said that was a narrow interpretation based on old laws and that "in this global village a man can have more than one place at which he resides."

He said the singer's commitment to helping disadvantaged children also should have been taken into account in the decision.

Madonna has founded a charity, Raising Malawi, which helps feed, educate and provide medical care for some of Malawi's more than 1 million orphans, half of whom have lost a parent to AIDS.

Children's welfare groups had expressed concern that rules meant to protect children were being bent because of Madonna's celebrity, and perhaps out of gratitude for what she has done for Malawi, one of the world's poorest and most AIDS-ravaged countries.

Chinula said that with Friday's ruling, the adoption was final, as he had requested of the court. This could not immediately be confirmed.

When Madonna adopted David, the process took months and included a child welfare official's visit to Madonna's home, which then was in London, to review her fitness as a mother.

Chinula said none of this would be necessary this time.

"What the Supreme Court has done is grant a full adoption," he said.

The appeal court ruling took more than an hour to read in court.

"The matter of residence should be determined at the time of application of the adoption," Chief Justice Munlo read. "In this case, Madonna was in Malawi not by chance but by intention. She is looking after several orphans whose welfare depends on her. She can therefore not be described as a sojourner."

The ruling also said the judges saw only two options for Chifundo; "either to stay at the orphanage without the love of family and live with the possibility of destitution, or be with Madonna where she is assured of love.

"Every child has the right to love," it said.

Madonna met the girl in 2006 at Kondanani Children's Village, an orphanage in Bvumbwe, just south of Blantyre. It was the same year she began the process of adopting David, whom she found at another orphanage in central Malawi.

The girl's 18-year-old mother was unmarried and died soon after she gave birth. Since Madonna moved to adopt the girl, a dispute has arisen between the girl's maternal relatives, who agreed to the adoption, and Kambewa, who says he is the father and wants to care for the girl himself.

Kambewa has acknowledged he had never seen the girl, but had tried to stop the adoption.

The girl's maternal relatives have said they do not believe Kambewa is the father, and his objections were not addressed in Friday's ruling.

The chairman of the coalition of non-governmental organizations that had opposed Madonna's adoption efforts said Friday's ruling "disregarded" international agreements on children's rights and adoptions.

Undule Mwakasungula also took issue with the argument that because Madonna has made an investment in the country and has interests there, she could be considered a resident.

"We are a bit surprised but we can't challenge it because the Supreme Court has ruled and we have to go with that," he said

Fox even interjects when asked if she wanted to follow in Jolie's footsteps of starting out as a sex symbol before taking on serious roles.

Still, the star -- who admits "I'm clearly not ugly" -- isn't bothered by the fact that she's seen as a sex symbol.

"I don't know why someone would complain about that," she says. "That just means that the bar has been set pretty low. People don't expect me to do anything that's worth watching. So I can only be an overachiever. I think all women in Hollywood are known as sex symbols. That's what our purpose is in this business. You're merchandised, you're a product. You're sold and it's based on sex. But that's okay. I think women should be empowered by that, not degraded."

Malawi's High Court ruled in April she could not adopt 4-year-old Mercy James, because the singer was not a resident of Malawi. Madonna appealed.

Supreme Court spokesman Joseph Chigona told Reuters on Thursday that the announcement would be made at 0700 GMT (3:00 a.m. EST) on Friday.

Malawi's government came under fire after Madonna adopted a 13-month-old child, David Banda, in 2006, with critics accusing it of giving her special treatment by skirting laws that ban non-residents from adopting children.

Rights groups accused the government of giving Madonna, a U.S. citizen, special treatment. The government had supported Madonna's attempt to adopt Mercy, saying she was a worthy mother.

An AIDS epidemic in the southern African country has orphaned more than one million children and Madonna has set up a charity for Malawian children.

In her ruling in April, High Court judge Esimie Chombo warned against celebrity adoptions, saying they could lead to child trafficking.

Madonna has entertained millions around the world with hits like "Material Girl" and "Papa Don't Preach," creating a fair amount of controversy along the way.

The star, who was divorced last year from British film director Guy Ritchie, is one of the music industry's most successful singers, with album sales of more than 200 million.

Indeed, even yours truly has been left rather stumped by this choice to use a Getty red carpet photo instead of the usual stylised photo-shoot image. As if that wasn't strange enough, there isn't even an interview with Ange inside the mag, just an essay written by Naomi Wolf about the actress. As some have put it, it's bordering on tabloid.

"It's a sad state when a legitimate [fashion] magazine goes to the lengths of doing a write around. That's saved for tabloids," said a Hollywood publicist.

As for Harper's reaction, a spokesperson said: "Clearly, we are in an Angelina moment right now, and in a recent online poll, our readers reinforced that, overwhelmingly choosing Angelina as the woman they admired most for having it all. LOS ANGELES: Hollywood's biggest actors union approved a new contract with entertainment industry producers Tuesday, ending a bitter labour dispute that sparked fears of a devastating strike.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) said in a statement its members had voted 78 per cent to 22 per cent in favour of a two-year contract deal, which had been drawn up in April after closed door negotiations.

SAG members had been working without a formal contract after failing to agree a new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to replace a previous agreement that expired on June 30 last year.

Multiple attempts to broker a new deal foundered since then, with SAG negotiators seeking greater royalties from sales and showings of work screened on the Internet.

The possibility of a potentially crippling actors' walkout was raised last December, when hardline union leaders announced that a ballot of members would be held to seek authorisation for a strike.

However that announcement was met with anger by moderates within SAG, with Tom Hanks, George Clooney, Robert Redford and Russell Crowe amongst dozens of high-profile names to state their opposition to a possible strike.

The moderate backlash led to SAG's lead negotiator, Doug Allen, being forced out, raising hopes that the new bargaining team could seal a deal.

In a sign of the deep divisions within the actors union, SAG President Alan Rosenberg, one of the most trenchant opponents of the new contract, insisted the deal was ‘devastatingly unsatisfactory.’

‘The membership has spoken and has decided to work under the terms of this contract that many of us, who have been involved in these negotiations from the beginning, believe to be devastatingly unsatisfactory,’ Rosenberg said.

The union chief warned he would seek to form an alliance with other entertainment industry guilds to broker new terms in 2011.

‘I call upon all SAG members to begin to ready themselves for the battle ahead,’ he added.

Meanwhile Hollywood producers welcomed the actors' union approval.

‘The ratification vote by SAG members is good news for the entertainment industry,’ an AMPTP statement said.

‘We look forward to working with SAG members — and with everyone else in our industry — to emerge from today's significant economic challenges with a strong and growing business.’

That made it the No. 1 draw for the weekend instead of Disney and Pixar Animation's "Up," which came in second with $44.1 million. Sunday studio estimates had "Up" edging "The Hangover" by about $1 million.

It's rare that the first- and second-place movies on Sunday flip-flop when final numbers come out Monday. But strong attendance Sunday allowed "The Hangover" to pull ahead.

With heavy matinee traffic, family films such as "Up" usually hold on better through Sunday than adult movies like "The Hangover."

Warner Bros. had expected Sunday's National Basketball Association playoff game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic to cut into business for the R-rated "The Hangover," the tale of four friends at an out-of-control bachelor party weekend in Las Vegas.

Massive crowds filled the main government plaza in West Palm Beach, and even heavy tropical rain failed to dampen the protesters' enthusiasm to get the word out about their firm opposition to President Obama and his destructive policies. People are mad, furious, but still capable of having fun and staying positive despite our trying times.

There was no good news for President Obama. While the event was technically non-partisian, I saw little evidence of Democrats. While many quite reasonably said the two parties shared the blame for our current mess, agreement was unanimous that President Obama was seriously messing up the situation.

The usual single issue groups, on abortion, guns and the like, showed up, but the crowd stayed focused on the theme of the incompetent Obama administration and its alarming drift towards socialism.

Waving posters, placards and even sporting a pirate ship, the protest featured colorful and imaginative signs and slogans.

There were also speeches by various political leaders, mostly Republican, and the anti-tax, anti-spending theme was received enthusiastically from the crowd.

People are mad, furious, at the current course the Obama Administration is taking in its attempts to right our economic ship through massive overspending and social programs.

At the same time, the mood was anything but glum. It was in many ways a showcase of what makes America great - the cleverness and ingeneuity of its people. People worked very hard to outdo the rest with the most creative signs. Those who had pre-printed signs from their favorite pressure groups were lost in a colorful maze of original signs, all different.

While many expected disruptions from ACORN and the like, the protest went completely smoothly. I only saw one Obama supporter. He talked in a spooky, almost robotic tone, as though he was shocked at the passionate level of opposition to The One and his policies.

While people are angry, what is really impressive is the fun and fellowship when conservatives protest. It was a great, creative way to blow off some steam and send our government officials a vital mission: We are watching them closely, and ready to wreak revenge for their sins come election time.

Eto'o put the Spanish champions ahead in the 10th minute at the Stadio Olimpico. The three-time African player of the year from Cameroon took a pass from Andres Iniesta, cut around defender Nemanja Vidic and beat Edwin van der Sar. The goalkeeper got a touch on the right-footed shot but couldn't keep it from going in at the near post.
Messi, a 21-year-old star of Argentina's national team, easily won the glamour duel with reigning FIFA player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi scored on a header from about 6 yards in the 70th off a cross from Xavi Hernandez, his ninth goal of the tournament and his first in 11 games against English opponents.
Messi, who had 38 of Barcelona's 153 goals this season, set off colorful celebrations at one end of the stadium, filled with 62,467 fans, and left English fans in silence as Manchester United's European unbeaten streak ended at 25 games.
In its first season under coach Pep Guardiola, a former Barcelona star who began as a ball boy at Camp Nou, the Catalan power won Europe's top club competition for the third time following victories in 1992 and 2006. It also swept Spain's La Liga and Copa del Rey.
"I've been waiting for so long to get this title," said Barcelona forward Thierry Henry, who played for the Arsenal team that lost to Barcelona in the 2006 final. "The last five minutes were the longest of my life."
Manchester United, which won the Premier League, English League Cup and Club World Cup, was trying to become the first team to win consecutive European titles since AC Milan in 1989-90. The Red Devils also won the tournament in 1968 and 1999.
United manager Alex Ferguson was trying to match the record of Liverpool's Bob Paisley, who coached three teams to European titles.
"We started the game brightly. We were confident and we could have been in front," Ferguson said. "We didn't play as well as we can, but they are a good team. We have to give them credit. Xavi and Iniesta can keep the ball all night. They made it very difficult."

United was thoroughly outplayed. South Korean winger Park Ji-sung became the first Asian to appear in a Champions League final and almost scored in the opening minute but his shot was deflected wide after Ronaldo's free kick was blocked by goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
In an effort to tie the score, Ferguson brought on Carlos Tevez for midfielder Anderson at the start of the second half, then added Berbatov for Park in the 66th. Ferguson's final move was to insert Paul Scholes for Ryan Giggs in the 75th.
United defender Rio Ferdinand, and Henry and Iniesta all started after overcoming injuries.
